A colicking horse, a sick foal, a fever in a barn full of show horses heading to Congress next week — those decisions have to be made now. Our on-site laboratory returns results while your horse is still here, not the following Tuesday.

 

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

 

Evaluates red cells, white cells, and platelets — the first look at whether a horse is fighting infection, anemic, dehydrated, or inflamed. It's the starting point for nearly every sick-horse workup and part of every pre-anesthetic screen.

 

Equine Chemistry Profiles

 

Organ function and metabolic status: kidney values, liver enzymes, electrolytes, muscle enzymes, and protein levels.

Serum Amyloid A (SAA)

 

SAA is an acute-phase protein that rises within hours of infection or inflammation and falls just as quickly when it resolves. Conventional inflammatory markers move slowly by comparison.

 

That speed makes it useful in two ways. It helps distinguish bacterial infection from other causes of fever, which informs whether antibiotics are warranted. And because it drops fast, serial SAA tells you whether a horse is genuinely responding to treatment — days before the clinical picture makes it obvious.

 

Particularly valuable in post-surgical monitoring, foals, and horses with a fever of unknown origin.

 

EHV-1 and EHV-4 Testing

 

Equine herpesvirus testing for horses presenting with fever, respiratory signs, or neurologic symptoms.EHV-1 is the strain responsible for neurologic disease and abortion, and outbreaks have shut down major show grounds. When a horse comes off the road with a fever, the question isn't just what's wrong with that horse — it's whether the rest of the barn is exposed. In-house testing means the isolation decision gets made the same day rather than after a two-day wait during which the horse has already been in the shed row.

 

Foal IgG Testing

 

Newborn foals are born without immunity and acquire it entirely through colostrum in the first hours of life.

 

IgG testing measures whether adequate transfer actually occurred.

Failure of passive transfer is a genuine emergency. A foal that didn't get enough antibody is at high risk of septicemia, and the treatment window is narrow. T

 

Testing at 18 to 24 hours old gives you time to act with plasma if the numbers come back low.Any foal from a mare that dripped milk before foaling, had a difficult delivery, or didn't nurse promptly should be tested. Honestly, every foal should be — it's inexpensive relative to what it prevents.
